Write to your MP - stop the EHRC's Code of Practice!
Members of PCS can help the LGBT+ community directly today by contacting their MP to ask them to support the Early Day Motion tabled by a cross-bench coalition of MPs, designed to oppose the implementation of the the EHRC's latest Code of Practice before it becomes law. At time of writing, nearly 100 MPs have signed the motion. We have just 22 days to act.
Read our statement on the EHRC's guidance and why it should be opposed.
Described by the Liberal Democrats as "not fit for purpose", and "impractical, intrusive and inhumane" by the Green Party, the code could provide the basis for further segregation in our society and, in the view of Proud, lays the groundwork for the genocide of the Trans+ community in the United Kingdom, as the Lemkin institute warned in its Red Flag Alert just 12 months ago.
PCS has distinct policy to oppose this Code of Practice, as Motion A348, carried just weeks ago at the PCS Annual Delegate Conference, was written precisely with this impending guidance in mind, with distinct direction for PCS to write to ministers to request a full parliamentary scrutiny. Delegates to Conference have consistently provided PCS with the direction to oppose biological essentialism and to fight for the liberation of the Trans+ community.
Early Day Motion
Tabled on 01 June 2026, the motion is clear:
That the draft Code of Practice for Services, public functions and associations, a copy of which was laid before this House on 21 May, be disapproved.
The motion's first six sponsoring MPs are from Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. It is important that a majority of MPs support it, though equally important that they are engaged in the debate and subsequent vote which must be called.
Gaining a majority of MPs isn't sufficient alone and your MP must be equipped with the right arguments to fight the Code when the time comes and sufficient support in the House and in their party to vote to oppose the implementation of the guidance. Through these actions and more, our Union can place the correct political pressure on the Government and we can act as a lever to encourage the Government to intervene.
We still have much more of a fight ahead of us, whatever the outcome. As the largest trade union for civil servants in the UK, other trade unions look to PCS as an example of how to behave. We must lead the way.
Already, other unions are calling for action, such as Unison through a statement by its recently elected General Secretary Andrea Egan. We must do the same.
